Taycan: Porsche’s all-Electric Car to become an “Eye Candy” for Tesla Owners

Porsche’s new all-electric sports car ‘Taycan’ is a “head turner!” and is getting a lot of attention from people. According to the head of the Porche’s North American operations, the car is receiving a surprising amount of interest from Tesla owners.

Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said Tesla owners are the highest among the “thousands” of potential U.S. customers who have shown “sincere interest” in the vehicle.

Porsche is “Very Happy”

On the sidelines of the L.A. Auto Show in November, Zellmer stated, “They currently drive a Tesla, they’re open to experiencing something new now”. Adding to it he said, “We’re very happy about that”. The German automaker is “surprised” by the initial number of owners from Tesla, which is known for its cult following.

People owing cars from rival brands such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have also shown interest in Porsche’s EV. Existing Porsche owners made up about half of the potential U.S. consumers who are enthusiastic about the vehicle, according to Zellmer. The company refused to disclose a specific amount of the U.S. hand-raisers for the Taycan.

Earlier, Porsche said about 20,000 people globally had shown significant interest in the vehicle by visiting a dealership or placing a deposit. Apart from this number, some people registered online to receive information on the Taycan. The number of online registrations was kept confidential.

Porsche is Expecting the Sales to Go Up

According to Zellmer, Porsche has high expectations from Taycan and the vehicle will increase sales. This will help the company generate record-breaking U.S. sales in 2020. Adding to it he mentioned that the company’s sales in Germany were up by 6.5% through October — “putting it on pace to top its record U.S. retail sales of 57,202 in 2018”.

“With the Taycan coming into the U.S., the only way is up for us,” Zellmer said. “That is an additional model line, so we expect us to exceed previous year’s sales by a margin”.

According to Zellmer, Porsche plans to amplify its reputation and customer experience to distinguish Taycan from the Tesla Model S and other vehicles from its competitors.

Taycan v/s Tesla Model S

The Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S are identical in terms of size and performance. However, consumers are ready to pay a premium for the neoteric Taycan compared to the aging Model S, which began production in 2012.

If we talk about the price, the announced starting price range for the base Taycan 4S is $103,800 and $185,000 for the top-end Taycan Turbo S whereas, the starting price of the top-line Tesla Model S is $99,990. The price of the base Taycan is expected to go below $100,000, according to Automotive News.
