Tom Hanks and His Wife Rita Wilson Contracted Coronavirus Disease in Australia

One of the veteran legends in Hollywood film-industry and Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, have been tested positive for Wuhan coronavirus during a film shooting in Australia. At present, the US has more than 1,000 people infected by the Covid-19 disease and the couple is the first major American celebrities who have been contracted the virus.

Tom Hanks’ Statement on Twitter

The Hollywood superstar, Hanks said on Twitter that he and his wife have tested positive for coronavirus in Australia. The news was tweeted after the couple, who are both at the age of 63, was tested during the film shooting since both of them reported having tiredness and achy with slight fevers. Citing the confirmation of the news, Hanks tweeted, “To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus and were found to be positive.”

Hanks recently traveled to Australia to start shooting a biography film about Elvis Presley in which he was set to play a role of Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, in the Warner Bros. production. Taking a precaution, the film actor said both of them would be “tested, observed and isolated” for as long as required. He added, “Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We’ll keep the world posted and updated.”

Hanks won his Academy Awards for best actor category in his role in 1994’s “Philadelphia”, in which he played a man stricken with AIDS and won another for “Forrest Gump” in the following year. While Wilson has cast in some movies such as “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Runaway Bride”.

Responses from the Production Team

Without exposing the name of the crew member, Warner Bros said in a statement, “We have been made aware that a company member from our Elvis feature film, which is currently in pre-production in The Gold Coast, Australia, has tested positive for COVID-19.” The production team stated, “We are working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual.”

Meanwhile, the production team has not mentioned about Hanks while making the statement and has not made it clear whether the filming would be postponed due to the actor’s health condition. The film studio added, “The health and safety of our company members are always our top priority, and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world.”

Chet, the couple’s son, wrote on Instagram saying that he had talked to his parents and it was confirmed that they both were fine. He said in a video message, “Yeah, it’s true, my parents got coronavirus. Crazy… They’re not even that sick. They’re not worried about it, they’re not tripping but they’re going through the necessary health precautions obviously.”
