Taiwan is planning to impose restrictions of entry to the island for most foreigners as part of measures for coronavirus prevention. Foreigners will be excluded who are resident permit holders and diplomats, the government stated on Wednesday, as it combats rise in imported cases.
Taiwan has won applause and appreciation from health experts for its efforts to effectively control the outbreak of the virus; however, it is now recording a daily increase in cases from people coming back to the island from other countries, especially Europe.
The government has already requested its Taiwanese citizens not to travel abroad unless it is very crucial, and has now escalated its controls to restrict from midnight (1600 GMT) the entry of most foreigners.
Health Minister Chen Shih-Chung, declaring the new rules, stated that all people coming to Taiwan are going to be put into home quarantine for 14 days.
He pointed out that the number of imported cases has “increased sharply.” Taiwan has registered 77 cases to date, of which most of the recent new cases from the last two days have been imported from abroad. The government did not comment on when the new measures are going to end.
Establishing Cooperation with the US
Joseph Wu, Foreign Minister, talking at the same news conference, said Taiwan is also going to step cooperation with the United States, where the outbreak of the virus is pretty fast. They are planning to help with the research and production of vaccines.
Wu stated the United States is going to offer Taiwan materials for 300,000 protective suits, while Taiwan is going to provide a weekly supply of 100,000 masks to the United States when the island has accumulated enough supply for itself.
“This symbolizes the close relationship between Taiwan and the United States and is for the joint efforts to combat the disease. We hope to join hands to contribute to international society,” Wu said.
In late January, Taiwan banned the export of face masks and has since amplified its weekly production to 11 million. Health Minister Chen stated the government is aiming to raise that number to 15 million in approaching days.
